The Online Manuscript-Writing Program Every DNP Needs

The original My DNP Manuscript instructional program was only offered as a self-paced, on-demand program.

But when it comes to writing, many people need personal guidance and the opportunity to discuss content and structure issues with a manuscript-writing professional.

Thus, the guided, instructor-led version of the popular manuscript-writing program was born.

Pilot tested with both DNP students and graduates in late 2020, the synchronous program--taught via Zoom--was a success.

The My DNP Manuscript Instructor-Led Writing Program Contents

DNPs who participated in the 2020 pilot program appreciated the ability to ask questions specific to their own unique quality-improvement projects during the course of the 6-week program.

To offer even more personalized discussion and feedback, courses in 2022 are scheduled to take place over 8 weeks. That means we'll have 2 additional sessions to address participant concerns and discuss, as a group, the right way forward.

Each synchronous, instructor-led session includes the following features:
  • Thorough explanations and examples of how to write each part of a journal manuscript: background and literature review, purpose and aims, methods, results, discussion, and abstract.
  • Lively discussion clarifying what content belongs in each section, how to organize that content, and how to determine what parts of your previous coursework should be left out.
  • Tips for writing each section of your manuscript in the correct voice, using the correct tense, and in proper scholarly writing style.
  • Loads of time for Q&A, addressing the questions you have about your particular project and manuscript.
The newly expanded 8-week instructor-led course is divided into the following sessions:
  1. Introduction to the Course, and How to Approach Writing a Manuscript (all the secrets for making writing easy, right from the first sentence, including how to choose a journal)
  2. Write the Introduction (Broad and Local Problem statements, Purpose, Aims)
  3. Write Your Literature Review/Synthesis (and merge it effectively with your Introduction from Session 2)
  4. Write the Methods Section (Part I, with more detail about how to write about theories, frameworks, and models)
  5. Write the Methods Section, Part II (emphasizing the Implementation subsection)
  6. Write the Results/Findings Section
  7. Write the Discussion and Implications Sections
  8. Write the Abstract and Prepare for Journal Submission
Each session is focused on the needs of you, the participant, so we may move from one topic to another within a single session or spend more time on one topic, as needed.

Addressing your questions is priority #1!

Regardless of how much time we spend on the Methods or the Introduction, the goal of this manuscript-writing course is simple:

To get you to the point where you know exactly what you need to write to get your manuscript into publication-ready condition.

And if you work hard during the weeks between our sessions together, you should plan to have a manuscript ready to submit by the end of the 8-week course.

(Hint: To do that, though, you MUST select an appropriate journal before Week 2 of the course!)

What materials are included as part of the course?

The slides used in the 2nd edition of the program have been updated to reflect significant changes in format and delivery.

Those updated 3rd-edition slideshows create the framework for our discussions each week.

Each enrolled student will have access to a downloadable PDF of those slides for review and note-taking, as well as access to the complete on-demand video-based program.

In addition, during the course of the program, all participants will have access to the following videos that help illustrate and enrich their understanding of specific aspects of the writing process:

  • A complete background section of a manuscript, including the broad and local problem statements
  • A complete introductory section of a manuscript, including the broad and local problem statements and literature/evidence review
  • A video showing different examples of how to combine the data collection and implementation sections of a manuscript
  • A video explaining how to write transitions and how to use them in each section of your manuscript
  • A video explaining exactly how to write about the use of theories, models, or frameworks in the context of a DNP project

The main learning outcomes for each session of the writing program are listed in detail on the About the Program page.

Will the instructor-led writing course help me write a manuscript?

All of the 2020 pilot program participants agreed:

"This 6-week guided Pilot Program helped me write a better final manuscript than I could have done prior to participating in the program."

The group discussions and personalized feedback given during the course were some of the most helpful parts of the course, according to participants. Now with 2 additional sessions, you'll benefit from even more of that focused attention.

You can read additional feedback from participants here.

When is the next instructor-led course taking place?

Instructor-led courses are available on request for groups of 8 or more participants.

Participants do not need to all come from the same university or healthcare organization. You can request a course if you are:
  • A group of alumni from the same DNP program
  • A group of DNP graduates working at the same healthcare organization
  • A group of DNPs who are members of the same nursing association
  • A group of current DNP students wishing to supplement their learning during their DNP program
  • A DNP program director wishing to add a writing-instruction component to your DNP project-related courses
  • Any group of 8 or more individuals who want to learn how to write high-quality manuscripts for publication

Program contents can be customized to meet your needs. For example, course contents may be presented over 8 days or anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. Spell out your preferences when you request your course.

To request an instructor-led course, please have one of your group complete the Teaching Request form.

If you are unable to gather a group of 8 for guided instruction, purchasing access to the updated and expanded 3rd edition is your best bet.
